In the 7th year of the Shunzhi reign of Qing (1650), the army of Qing seized Guilin. Qu Shisi and Zhang Tongchang were captured by Kong Youde and imprisoned in a folk house. Although imprisoned separately, they still sang and chanted poems together to show their lofty ideals. The forty poems of Chanting of Noble Spirit were exactly composed at that point. Noble spirit is the awe-inspiring righteousness. Chanting of Noble Spirit reflects the two people's lofty national integrity of facing death unflinchingly and heroically.
